Hydrogen: Market & development

Hydrogen market on the upswing

The Hydrogen Council’s Hydrogen Insights Report 2024 shows impressive growth in the hydrogen sector. Since 2020, the number of Final Investment Decision (FID) projects has increased sevenfold and investment has risen from USD 10 billion to USD 75 billion. Despite the potential of 48 million tons of clean hydrogen per year, current production volumes are still at 12 to 18 million tons. The hydrogen sector is on the right track, but further investment and political support is needed to make a significant contribution to the energy transition.

How is the hydrogen market developing? Insights from the Hydrogen Insights Report 2024

The hydrogen sector on course for growth
The Hydrogen Insights Report 2024 from the Hydrogen Council shows impressive growth in the hydrogen market. Since 2020, the number of projects with Final Investment Decision (FID) has increased sevenfold! At the same time, investments have risen from USD 10 billion to an impressive USD 75 billion in 2024. This rapid growth illustrates the growing confidence in hydrogen as the central energy carrier of the future.

Potential and reality: a big difference
Despite the enormous potential of 48 million tons of clean hydrogen per year, current production volumes are still between 12 and 18 million tons. This discrepancy shows that the sector is on the right track, but still has a lot of work to do to realize its full potential. Rising demand, particularly in industry and heavy goods transport, requires additional investment and increased political support.

Hydrogen as a driver of the energy transition
Hydrogen has the potential to play a key role in shaping the energy transition. It can be used in various sectors – from industry and transportation to electricity and heat generation. By integrating hydrogen technologies, companies can significantly reduce their CO2 emissions and make their energy supply more sustainable. This not only contributes to achieving global climate targets, but also strengthens the competitiveness of companies.

Measures required for sustainable growth
Targeted measures are required to realize the full potential of the hydrogen sector:
Increase investment: Both private and public investment must be increased to expand production capacity and promote new hydrogen projects.
Political support: Governments play a decisive role by creating framework conditions that support the hydrogen market, for example through support programs, tax incentives and the expansion of the necessary infrastructure.
Technological innovation: Further developments in hydrogen technology are essential to increase efficiency and reduce production costs. Research and development must be intensified in order to promote innovative solutions.
Networking and cooperation: Building strong networks and partnerships between companies, research institutions and governments is crucial to exploit synergies and facilitate market entry.

With the right investments and political support, hydrogen can make a significant contribution to the global energy transition. At evety, we are ready to actively shape this exciting development and pave the way to a sustainable energy future for our customers.

Hydrogen in Nettetal

Hydrogen in Nettetal – Promising potential in photovoltaics and heavy-duty mobility

Results of our hydrogen potential study for the city of Nettetal

We recently carried out a comprehensive hydrogen potential study on behalf of the town of Nettetal. The aim of the study was to analyze the existing renewable energy potential and to evaluate the possibilities for the use of hydrogen in various sectors. We would like to present the key results to you here.

Considerable potential in renewable energies

Our analyses show that Nettetal has considerable renewable energy potential. Over 50 % of this potential is accounted for by ground-mounted photovoltaic systems, of which less than 1 % has been used to date. This untapped potential offers an enormous opportunity to significantly increase local energy production from renewable sources and create the basis for sustainable hydrogen production.

Growing demand for hydrogen in industry and mobility

The study forecasts a growing demand for hydrogen in industry. Demand is expected to rise in all of the scenarios examined, as companies increasingly switch to climate-friendly energy sources. Of particular interest is the potential demand for hydrogen in the mobility sector, especially in heavy goods transportation. Although this demand is not predicted in all scenarios, it could even exceed Nettetal’s hydrogen potential. This underlines the importance of developing suitable infrastructures and supply concepts at an early stage.

Recommendation for a hydrogen pilot project

As an indicator for market development and to promote the hydrogen economy in the region, we recommend the implementation of a suitable hydrogen pilot project before 2030. Such projects are essential to gain practical experience, increase acceptance and drive technological development.

Economic attractiveness through competitive amortization

Our model calculations show that competitive amortization is possible in the region. Depending on the production and consumption scenario, a hydrogen project can achieve a payback period of 5 to 15 years. This makes investments in hydrogen technologies not only ecologically sensible, but also economically attractive.

Further information

For those interested, we have prepared an excerpt of the management summary as a presentation. In addition, the Rheinische Post media group has published an article about the presentation of our study.

Acknowledgments

We would like to thank Sascha Nowak, Timo K., Harald Rothen, Markus Grühn and the mayor Christian Küsters for their excellent cooperation. Together we were able to gain important insights for the sustainable development of the town of Nettetal.

Infrastructure & H2 markets

The H2 core network is finally here!

A milestone for the hydrogen infrastructure

The time has finally come: the H2 core grid has been officially unveiled! We at evety are extremely excited about this decisive step towards a new, sustainable energy system. Together with our partner OGE, we are ready to support generation and imports upstream of the core grid and industry and distribution grids downstream of the core grid. In this way, we are actively driving the energy transition and bringing many H2 molecules into the pipeline! 🤝🚀

Why is the H2 core grid so important?

The H2 core network forms the backbone of a sustainable hydrogen infrastructure in Germany. It enables the efficient transport of green hydrogen over long distances and connects producers, importers and consumers on a national level. By utilising and converting existing gas pipelines, the expansion can be accelerated and made cost-efficient. This is a key factor in achieving climate targets and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Our role at evety

As experts in sustainable energy solutions, we help companies and municipalities to fully utilise the potential of hydrogen. Together with OGE, we contribute our expertise to optimise the infrastructure both upstream and downstream of the core grid. We promote the production of green hydrogen, support import projects and develop solutions for industry and distribution grids. Our aim is to cover the entire value chain.

Sustainability & climate protection

Catastrophe prevention day

Together against growing climate risks

On 13 October, we celebrate the International Day for Disaster Reduction. This day is intended to draw attention to the increasing risks posed by extreme weather events and emphasise the importance of prevention and preparedness. The recent hurricanes ‘Helene’ and ‘Milton’ in the USA are impressive examples of how urgent disaster prevention measures have become.

Climate change as a driver of natural disasters

Extreme weather events such as storms, floods and droughts are increasing worldwide – a direct consequence of climate change. These natural disasters not only jeopardise human lives and infrastructure, but also have a significant economic impact. The day of action therefore not only emphasises the need to prevent natural disasters, but also our responsibility to actively combat climate change.

Reducing CO2 emissions is key

A decisive step towards reducing climate risks is to lower CO2 emissions. This requires a reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas. Companies play a central role in this by switching their energy supply to sustainable and renewable energies.

Our support for your company

At evety, we support companies in making their energy supply sustainable. We develop customised solutions for CO2 reduction and help you to benefit from the advantages of a sustainable approach in the long term. With our expertise, we help to ensure that your company not only acts in an ecologically responsible manner, but also remains economically viable for the future.

Shaping a sustainable future together

The International Day for Disaster Reduction reminds us that each of us can and must make a contribution. Let’s tackle the challenges of climate change together and actively contribute to the reduction of natural disasters.
