Rh2ein Main Connect – Paving the way for a sustainable hydrogen infrastructure

The RMC project aims to lay the foundations for a regional hydrogen distribution network in the Rhine-Main region. Our clients are striving for a future-proof and emission-free infrastructure to meet future demand for green hydrogen and support the regional energy transition. We are supporting Rh₂ein Main Connect in the concretization and further detailing of the initial planning.

Strategy + process

Holistic approach to hydrogen infrastructure
Our strategic approach for Rh₂ein Main Connect is based on a multi-step solution approach that covers all aspects of the hydrogen value chain – from production to transportation and application. We rely on structured project planning and regular project meetings to continuously monitor and adjust progress.

Project planning and structuring
We ensure ongoing project planning and status reporting by initially creating and coordinating a clear filing structure for the entire project. We ensure close collaboration with all project stakeholders by attending six project meetings per month and conducting multiple workshops, both virtually and on-site. These workshops include the recording and revision of documents, final presentations and interim workshops for continuous optimization.

Methodology and funding management
A key component of our methodology is the review and optimization of the business case model. In several meetings, we analyze and evaluate the existing model, identify optimization potential and coordinate this with best practices. We also consolidate all relevant funding opportunities and create an agile decision template for evaluating and selecting suitable funding. This enables Rh₂ein Main Connect to optimally benefit financially from government funding programs and ensure the profitability of the project.

Needs analysis and route identification
Through the detailed analysis of existing data and the simulation of ramp-up scenarios, we identify demand and develop customized solutions for hydrogen distribution. Our route planning takes into account technical, licensing and economic aspects in order to determine the most efficient and cost-effective pipeline routes. With comprehensive spatial resistance analyses and topographical maps, we lay the foundation for the smooth implementation of hydrogen distribution networks.

Solution + implementation

Efficient realization of hydrogen distribution networks

Within the RMC project, we support our clients in developing a valid planning basis and a model that can be continuously developed in order to continuously record the H2 infrastructure requirements in the region and to be able to make well-founded decisions about a possible infrastructure expansion.

As part of the needs assessment, we consolidated existing needs data, structured the data basis used in the project and significantly expanded it in consultation with the consortium.

The requirements determined in this way, in conjunction with the planned pipeline sections of the hydrogen core network of OGE and GASCADE, form the basis for our route planning of the regional network.

The pipeline dimensioning of the planned sections was carried out using hydraulic modeling. These were converted into a comprehensive cost model and provide the basis for the economic assessment of individual pipeline sections as well as the overall project.

We are delighted to have been awarded the special prize for this project as part of the DVGW’s Innovation Award for New Gases 2024.

Added value

Comprehensive infrastructure solution

We cover the entire H₂ value chain. Structured project planning, needs analysis and route identification create an efficient, cost-effective H₂ network. Spatial resistance analyses and funding management ensure cost-effectiveness and accelerate implementation.
